ABOUT GROUND
The M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore has only ever been used for one T20 International, a low-scoring win by Pakistan over India on Christmas Day 2012, who chased 133 with two balls to spare. In ODIs it hasn’t been used since 2013 so it’s hard to say what might be a good first innings total
West Indies are arguably stronger in all three departments and a are a solid bet in the match odds market against Sri Lanka. Andre Russell and Chris Gayle look to be the key players on the day
There were positives and negatives to take from the last match. On the plus side: they won,Chris Gayle was at his unplayable best and Andre Russell was also pretty good – two wickets with the ball with a decent economy rate given the context of the match, some late runs and best of all… some outstanding fielding in the deep, cutting off boundaries and putting pressure on the batsmen running between the wickets. Suliemann Benn was also very good so it’s a bit of a mystery as to why he didn’t bowl his full number of overs. Now, those negatives: were it not for Gayle, West Indies would have lost the match. He scored more than half his side’s runs and of the 11 sixes West Indies hit, he hit them all. No other batsman really got going. The much-vaunted Dwayne Bravo was extremely expensive with the ball despite taking two wickets and paceman Jerome Taylor was even more expensive and took no wickets at all.Still, the Windies are notorious for being a team of match-winners rather than a team. Last time it was Gayle, next time it could be Russell, Bravo, Badree or a few others. They’ll probably be unchanged for this match unless Test and ODI skipper Jason Holder comes in for Taylor.
Sri LankaA similar story to the West Indies. They have the evergreen Tillekeratne Dilshan to thank forchasing Afghanistan’s 153. Dilshan scored an unbeaten 83 with a few cameos from the likes of Thisara Perera and Angelo Matthews but they’ll need to improve their batting if they’re to beat…well, anyone else! Rangana Herath was excellent with his left arm spin and his figures were dented by a few blows from Asquar Stanikzai, who at that stage was in full flow. Young paceman PVD Chameera was extremely economical despite finishing wicketless. Lasith Malinga has been ruled out of the tournament after failing to recover from a knee injury. Skipper Matthews’ decision to come in at six paid off this time but it’s about time he takes more responsibility as a senior batsman and comes in at 4 or 5.
